Unix level test to see if smtp is working from command line

Start a shell, then:

$ telnet justanexample.com 25

MAIL FROM:user1@justanexample.com
250 2.1.0 user1@justanexample.com... Sender ok
RCPT TO:appsdba@yahoo.com

If relaying is denied, then it will give message

550 5.7.1 appsdba@yahoo.com... Relaying denied
